This week’s readings are based on the Unsung Heroes sermon series. This season, we are looking at some of the lesser-known heroes of the faith, seeing the big impact they had, and understanding how we can learn from their example. Slow down, read the text, and then let it read you.
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
Matthew 22:36-40 (NIV)
As we have looked at the story of the Good Samaritan found in Luke 10 to understand how to love our neighbor, there may be no Scripture that summarizes what this means better than this one found in Matthew 22. In short, this tells us that it all boils down to loving God and loving our neighbor. Let’s take a moment to ask God for his help in doing exactly that.
Heavenly Father, help us to live out this important commandment, the greatest commandment. Give us the capacity to love You as we should and the opportunity to love our neighbors well. Give us the power and the strength of the Holy Spirit to reflect Your light and Your love to others You put in our path. We pray this in the mighty Name of Jesus. Amen!
